Programs & Services

The Adult School is part of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, as well as  the San Luis Obispo County Adult Education Consortium which has enabled us to bring greater opportunity to community members seeking education for enhancing their place in the workforce through our diploma and HiSET programs and ESL classes.  Classes are held in San Luis Obispo, Los Osos, Morro Bay, and Avila Beach.  If you or someone you know needs financial support to take one of our classes,  please call the Adult School office to inquire about our scholarship program. 

English as a Second Language (ESL)

All levels of English learners are welcome in our free ESL distance learning classes, which are offered in the mornings or evenings. To enroll, please complete our ESL Pre-Registration Form. This form must be completed prior to registering for ESL classes. Once your information has been submitted, the Registrar will contact you to schedule an orientation appointment.

High School Diploma/High School Equivalency

Students must be at least 18 years old to attend the Adult School.  We're committed to providing students with ongoing support, offering individualized virtual instruction to help students achieve their educational goals. In response to COVID-19, the High School Diploma/Equivalency Program offers distance learning.  

All classes are FREE and by appointment only.  Register any time - it's never too late.  After an initial orientation, students may work with our teachers during Adult School designated hours .

 1. Complete the High School Diploma/Equivalency pre-registration form. CLICK HERE.

 2. Obtain a copy of your high school transcripts for your orientation appointment (contact the last school you attended and received credits from.)

 3. Work with an instructor/counselor to set your individualized learning plan.

4.  Attend 6 hours a week.

5.  Become a high school graduate.

6.  Transition to academic and career pathways.

Need Your Transcripts? 

If you attended San Luis Coastal Adult School and graduated and/or received class credits, and would like to order an official transcript, please send an email to adultschool@slcusd.org. Please include the following information in your email: Full name while attending the Adult School and your date of birth. The Adult School Registrar will contact you with additional information.

High School Equivalency Exam (HiSET)

In response to Covid-19, we have canceled HiSET exams until further notice.  Please contact HiSET or GED for high school equivalency in-home testing information.

The HiSet is equivalent to the GED and approved by the State of California.  We offer test preparation classes for the HiSET exam at the Adult School. Register for an initial orientation by completing  our pre-registration form and then study at your convenience and work with teachers during our Adult School designated hours  .  When you're ready, take the HiSET test online.


Lost your test scores? 

Go to the HiSET & GED official site links from the California Department of Education to request copies. If you took your GED at the Adult School at any time, including prior to 1990, please request GED records here.

Career Technical Education

Whether you’re job hunting or looking to earn a promotion, workforce prep classes will improve your skills and enhance your marketability.  Choose from courses in office skills, computer applications, apparel technique and construction, and other employment areas. A Certificate of Completion is awarded to students fulfilling course requirements. 

Career readiness classes can be free of charge with a referral from the Adult School or one of our partners: America’s Job Center, Eckerd, Department of Social Services, Child Care Resource Network, Community Action Partnership (CAPSLO), Lucia Mar USD, Templeton USD, and Cuesta College. 

Community Education Classes 

Enhance your lifelong learning with a class that fits your interests. Choose from an ever-changing, wide variety of offerings from categories such as;  art, cooking, dance, language, fitness, music, sewing and special interests.

Parent Participation Program

Join the fun and meet friends at Parent Participation! Enjoy a class designed for parenting infants, toddlers, or preschoolers, and learn about the developmental stage of your little one while forming connections with other parents. Credentialed teachers provide opportunities for imaginative play, singing, art, sensory exploration, cooperative experiences and outdoor fun. Strengthen your parenting skills through guided discussions, guest speakers, and focused observation of your child. All adults in a parenting role are welcome (including nannies and grandparents.) Children’s immunization records will be confirmed via CAIR. Those with records that are not up to date or missing will be contacted by our office.  

Register early, as classes can fill up quickly.  You're welcome to join any time throughout the session, if there are spots available in a class.  Click here to view and register for our current Parent Participation Program classes.

San Luis Obispo County Jail Programs

San Luis Coastal Adult School offers high school equivalency and workforce readiness programs at the San Luis Obispo County Jail. 

Registration, Fees & Refund Policy

Class Registration - All classes at San Luis Coastal Adult School are open to adults of San Luis Obispo and neighboring communities. Pre registration is required to prevent classes from being canceled due to low enrollment. 

HOW TO REGISTER:

Online Registration at SLOadultschool.org - Select  'View Classes & Register' and follow the prompts. You must pay with a credit card or echeck to register online. 

By Phone - Call the Adult School office at (805) 549-1222 during business hours. Let us know which classes you would like to join. Provide your credit card information.  

By EmailEmail the adult school with your questions or request for assistance and we will respond during our regular business hours.  Please include your full name, the course you're interested in, and a phone number, if you'd like a call back.

In Person (by appointment) - Please note that for the safety of our staff and students, our office is open by appointment only, following our school district's distance learning plan in response to Covid-19. Students can easily find assistance via our website, an email to the adult school or a phone call.  When offices reopen, students may come into the Adult School office during business hours and we will assist you with registering for the class of your choice. The Adult School accepts VISA™ and MasterCard™.

Insufficient Funds - a fee will be charged for checks returned by the bank.

REFUND POLICY- Refunds, minus a $10 service fee, will be granted if a student withdraws with at least 24 hours notice prior to the first day of class. A refund is not granted for students withdrawing from a class on the day it is scheduled to meet or after class has begun. There is no service fee charge for a student who transfers to another class.  In the event that the class is canceled due to low enrollment, class fees are fully refundable.

PARKING - All Department of Motor Vehicles regulations apply. Park only in designated spaces.

COMPLAINT POLICY - Any complaint regarding district compliance with state or federally-funded program regulations or possible discrimination should be reported to the administrator in charge.
